From January 2012 the Editor-in-Chief will select one of the papers appearing in each edition of Seizure as 'Editor's Choice'. Articles will be chosen because of their medical or social importance for people with epilepsy and researchers in fields related to epilepsy. They will be accompanied by an editorial comment and made available through free view from the Editor’s Choice Box on the Seizure website from the day the journal is published in paper form. This badge of particular quality and the early publication of the full text version of the article will increase the impact of the article and contribute to improving the impact of the whole journal.

Seizure 21/5, 2012: Western driving regulations for unprovoked first seizures and epilepsy

Neurologists regularly have to tell patients that they have epilepsy. Their explanation of this diagnosis will cover many difficult topics, including further investigations to rule out potentially serious underlying causes, the need for long term medication, the possibility of side-effects from medication, contraception, genetic risks, seizure-related injuries, the dangers associated with prolonged seizures and the small but important risk of sudden unexpected death. Predictably patients look anxious and upset when they hear so much bad news. What is more surprising is that many patients seem to be able to take all this in until the conversation turns to the topic of driving. Not uncommonly, the idea of loosing their driving licence triggers a greater emotional reaction than all of the other items listed above. read more.

Epilepsy Action is the largest member-led epilepsy organisation in Great Britain, acting as the voice for the UK's estimated 600,000 people with epilepsy, as well as their friends, families, carers, health professionals and the many other people on whose lives the condition has an impact.

About Seizure - European Journal of Epilepsy

Seizure - European Journal of Epilepsy is an international journal providing a forum for the publication of papers on all topics related to epilepsy and seizure disorders. These topics include the basic sciences related to the condition itself, the differential diagnosis, natural history and epidemiology of seizures, and the investigation and practical management of epilepsy (including drug treatment, neurosurgery and non-medical and behavioural treatments).

The journal also reflects the social and psychological burden and impact of epilepsy on the person who has it, his family and society, and the methods and ideas that may help to alleviate such handicaps and stigma as the condition may cause. The aim of the journal is to share and disseminate knowledge between all disciplines that work in the field of epilepsy.
